Respighi’s Soundtrack for Rome

Did you know that Rome has a soundtrack? It’s true! È vero!

In 1924, Italian composer Ottorino Respighi wrote the symphonic poem Pines of Rome to honour his adopted city and celebrate how our glorious Mediterranean pines are important to our culture.

Respighi was born in Bologna, Italy, but he had a deep love for The Eternal City. Along with Pines of Rome, he wrote Fontane di Roma (Fountains of Rome) and Feste Romane (Roman Festivals), which together form what is known by some as his “Roman Trilogy”.

New book celebrates my great uncle, Alceste De Ambris

The archive of my great uncle – Alceste De Ambris – was recently donated to the Archives Center of the State of Italy. It will be displayed to the public and to scholars at the presentation of the new book by author and curator Enrico Serventi Longhi – Alceste De Ambris: L’utopia Concreta (the concrete utopia of a revolutionary syndicalist).

Alceste De Ambris born in 1874 in Lunigiana. He was a trade-unionist, politician and journalist known for his original personality and often unconventional point of view. He became a Member of Parliament, among the ranks of interventionists disappointed by the “betrayal” of fascism. Opposing fascism, and being a vocal opponent of the Partito Nazionale Fascista and the Mussolini dictatorship, he was exiled to France, where he became one of the protagonists of the democratic anti-fascist movement. He died in France in 1934. after having been president of the Ligue Italienne des Droits de l’Homme for many years.
